Thyolo Council elects council chairperson

Thyolo: Thyolo District Council Thursday re-elected Councilor Amos Bakili as council chairperson and a new vice chairperson according to Local Government Act.

Speaking after the victory, Councillor Amosi Bakili, who is starting another one year term, said he would work with everybody and promised more in the new term.

“My door will be open for everybody. Let us work hand in hand in developing our district. We are all children of Thyolo,” said Bakili.

He also called upon fellow councillors who failed in the two positions to forget about the elections and focus on building Thyolo and Malawi at large.

He encouraged everyone to go and register come September 2 to be able to vote for the candidate they want come May, 2019.

After the election, District Commissioner (DC) for Thyolo, Justin Kathumba, said development at council level starts with the council chairperson.

“Our council is doing well because we have good structure and we want other district councils to come and learn in Thyolo how we are managing things,” said Kathumba.

He said unity and transparency are what develop the district. He urged the stakeholders to work hand in hand with the council and its leaders.

“Councillors and Members of Parliament have trusted the ones who have taken positions of chairperson and vice chairperson. This trust should bring unity and development to the council,” the DC pleaded.

The elections were conducted by Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) from Thyolo office. 14 councillors and four Members of Parliament participated in the vote.

Councillor Amosi Bakili from Masenjere Ward is still chairperson of the council while his vice chairperson is now Sandram Maulana from Khonjeni Ward.
