Two nabbed for illegal possession of ivory

Lilongwe, Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody two people for illegal possession of four elephant tusks and three pieces of ivory teeth.

The two are Petulo Chisale, aged 44 years, from Chikolwe Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mkanda in Mchinji and 31-year-old Bazillio Chipata of Mwabwera Village,T/A Kabudula in Lilongwe district.

According to Lilongwe Police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula, Chisale was arrested on May 22 at Kafoteka filling station while Chipata was arrested on May 24 at Shoprite car park in Lilongwe Old Town.

Dandaula said both arrest were made following tips from well wishers.

In the case of Chisale, police officers were following up on a tip that he was in possession of elephant tusks.

After investigations, the suspect was found at Kafoteka filling station with a black bag that contained unshelled groundnuts. Inside the groundnuts was a bag in which he hid the four ivory tusks, Dandaula told Malawi News Agency (Mana).

In a similar mission, police acted on a tip that Chipata was in possession of ivory teeth. Upon following up on the information, we found the suspect at Shoprite car park with a black plastic bag containing the ivory teeth, he said.

The suspects are still in police custody awaiting trial.
