Nkhotakota, A young boy and an elderly man have died within the week after being hit by different vehicles in two separate incidents in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota.
Nkhunga Police Public Relations Officer, Ignatius Esau confirmed with the Malawi News Agency (Mana) that both accidents happened in Mtupi area which is close to Dwangwa Trading Centre.
The first accident occurred on December 10 whereby a six year old boy, Allan Kondwani was hit to death by a vehicle registration number KK1823 while he was crossing the road. The vehicle was being driven by Stelia Mangochi.
In the second incident, 57 year old Moyenda Phiri was killed by a Toyota Hiace registration number NB4492 that was being driven by Daniel Kamanga. This accident happened on December 13, he explained.
He appealed to the general public to refrain from attacking drivers instead of assisting the injured whenever accidents occur, citing examples of what transpired in those accident scenes.
People were furious and wanted to beat up Mangochi but we came in fast to rescue her. In the second incident, angry people beat up the driver whom we managed to rescue and send to the hospital, he added.
Esau also advised all road users to adhere to road safety measures.
These accidents increased the total number of reported accidents in 2017 to 44 from 42.
Kondwani hailed from Chawanji Village, Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu while Phiri came from Chinombo Village Traditional Authority Kanyenda in Nkhotakota district.
