Blantyre, Sports Journalist in the country will on July 2 join the rest of the world in commemorating the World Sports Journalists Day (WSJD) that will take place in Salima.
According to a press statement issued by the Sports Writers Association of Malawi (SWAM) released on Wednesday, the commemorations aim at encouraging Sports Journalists to strive for excellence in their work and set an example to the world – not only the World of Sports, but to the world at large.
According to Chairperson for the Organizing Committee, Leonard Sharra, this is the first time for the seven year old SWAM, a professional body of sports writers registered with the Malawi Government and affiliated to the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), to join the commemoration.
The day will be celebrated under the local theme ‘Enhancing Excellence in Sports Reporting to Take the Game to Another Level’from June 30 to July 2 at Livingstonia Beach in Salima.
Activities marking the day among others are Beach Soccer tournament, Beach Volleyball Tournament, Poems by renowned poets, Live Band Performance by Lucious Banda and Journalist Innocent Chitimbe, displays by SWAM members, donation of items to patients at Salima District Hospital by SWAM and recognition of some local sports achievers and sports Journalists.
Beach Soccer and Beach Volleyball Tournaments will be open to teams from government or public institutions, private corporate firms or any group of interested individuals. Teams will have to pay registration fees of K100, 000 to participate in Beach Soccer and K75, 000 to participate in Beach Volleyball.
During the celebrations, SWAM will also hold an Annual General Meeting and a Sports Reporting Workshop.
