Phalombe, A newly introduced open contracting budget project by Youth Net and Counseling (YONECO) will rescue Phalombe district from substandard work by contractors, Malawi News Agency has learnt.
The project will among other things equip community members with advanced knowledge on open contracting, monitoring, supervision and construction basics to enable them track irregularities.
Speaking in an interview with Malawi News Agency (MANA) Tuesday, Media, Advocacy, Networking and Innovations Manager for YONECO, Charles Banda said the project would empower local people through radio platform whereby their grievances would be aired if not attended to by government agencies.
We will equip them with knowledge on procurement processes so that they should know how goods are procured, he explained.
Banda said the project was introduced following a thorough research which revealed that most of project funds are not accounted for at the council.
Director of Planning and Development (DPD) for Phalombe, Morson Magombo hailed the project saying it would ensure transparency and accountability on government funds.
Usually project funds do not come with enough monitoring and evaluation resources. Therefore this project will complement government’s efforts of enhance accountability on projects, he observed.
Coincidentally, Phalombe has been making headlines in 2017 for mismanaging project funds and flouting procurement procedures among other irregularities.
