Zomba, Youths and District Youth Officers (DYOs) from Eastern and Southern regions have commended the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) for introducing a K1 billion Youth Innovation Fund aimed at supporting youth initiatives towards economic empowerment.
National Youth Council of Malawi Chief Executive Officer, Dingiswayo Jere met the district officers and the youth through an interface meeting on Wednesday at Zomba district council offices.
Jere said NYCOM introduced the fund as one way of ensuring that youths in the country participate fully in economic activities through business and entrepreneurial skills that should improve the youths’ livelihood.
As National Youth Council of Malawi, we want to build up productive, economically empowered Malawian young people, added Jere.
Currently NYCOM has managed to mobilize K61million and has hopes that the remaining amount will gradually be realized through various means from youths and other well-wishers.
Government is there to support the youth, Jere said adding that government has good policies to support the youth in their quest for the youth’s economic independence.
In an interview District Youth Officer for Zomba, Kate Mwandira welcomed the initiative saying the Innovation fund was in the right direction towards youth economic empowerment.
She said the youths have potential to become self-reliant and economically stable if given startup capital.
Machinga based Forum for Youth Development (FOYODE) Director, Mphatso Kapito also welcomed the Youth Innovation Fund saying the fund would alleviate poverty among the youth in the country.
Poverty is a prohibiting factor towards youths’ dreams to prosperity, Kapito said while expressing hope that the fund would live up to its objectives.
The meeting drew district youth officers and youth representatives from Zomba, Mulanje, Phalombe, Machinga, Balaka, Mangochi and Ntcheu districts.
