Zambezi Evangelical church celebrates 125 years of mission

Blantyre, Zambezi Evangelical Church celebrated 125 years of existence at Mitsidi Synod in Blantyre from September 2-3, 2017.

Speaking in an interview with Malawi News Agency (Mana)in Blantyre Sunday, General Secretary of Zambezi Evangelical Church, Reverend Luckwell Mtima said that they organized the celebrations to thank God on what has done to them throughout the years.

We have this big event where the church is celebrating God and we are also looking back at what God has done throughout from 1892 to 2017. We are showcasing a number of programmes, ministries, activities the church is involved in the fulfilling the great commission like church planting, Relief works, health, education ,youth, women, children works, farming and orphan care as well, he pointed out.

Mtima said the church was founded in 1892 has over 300 Church Stations and at least four prayer houses under each church across the country except Likoma with branches in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa.

The General Secretary said as the church is celebrating its history, our aim is to spread the gospel about Jesus Christ.

He said the church provides social responsibility tot community by involving itself in other activities like building schools and health facilities.

The church has about five health centres in Blantyre, Ntcheu and Machinga which offer various services like outpatient departments, dental, maternity and ART among others.

He said the church was complimenting the work that the government is doing in the delivery of health services in the country.

Mtima said the church is facing several challenges like unavailability of ambulances at their hospital and poor roads network.

Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Kondwani Nankhumwa said the church has helped the government to promote its development agenda.

The church is not working only toward spiritually but working on social issues to assisting the government on works of health through the construction of the health clinic which will help people that are surrounding Chilomoni area, he noted.

The Minister officially opened the Mitsidi Health Clinic which was donated by Norwegian Church Aid that costs US$ 3 million.

He said the government would construct a new tarmac road which would connect the synod and health clinic through Local government and rural development.

Senior chief Kuntaja said the church should continue maintain their good reputations of preaching the gospel and doing charity works.

What the church has done its great, this should be exemplary to other churches who wants to help the government in different things like constructing bridges, clinics, boreholes, school and all things which are required in lives of people , he said.

President Prof. Peter Mutharika contributed K 500, 000 to the church.

Zambezi Evangelical Church was founded in 1892 by a missionary known as Joseph Booth.

Over 5,000 managed to attend the celebrations and it was spiced up by poetry, dances and music from women choir in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Celebration praise team and choir and parade from girl’s brigade.
