Global health champion Paul Farmer dies at 62

Boston (AFP) – Paul Farmer, an American physician and medical anthropologist renowned for his innovative work in providing health care to poorer countries, died Monday at age 62, his Partners in Health group said. The Boston-based organization said he “unexpectedly passed away today in his sleep while in Rwanda.” It did not specify a cause. Farmer’s work on providing healthcare solutions through a vast network he helped set up in some of the world’s poorest countries brought him wide acclaim. Malawi: African Development Fund signs $14.2 grant agreement for financial digitalization initiative

The African Development Fund (ADF) and the government of Malawi have signed a grant agreement for $14.2 million to undertake infrastructure upgrades and create a more efficient and transparent digital payment system. United States Provides Assistance to Flood-affected Communities

The U.S. government has thus far provided $100,000 (81 million MWK) in international disaster assistance funding to meet immediate humanitarian needs resulting from the flooding in southern Malawi. The assistance comes in response to President Lazarus Chakwera’s declared state of disaster and request for donor assistance.
