Tomato Farmers In Narok Benefit From (ISPOT) Project

International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) has launched an Integrated Sustainable Production of Tomatoes (ISPOT) project that will benefit tomato farmers in Narok County.

The ISPOT project will emphasize ecological approaches to pest management by ensuring human and environmental health is adhered to.

Speaking in Narok, Dr. Shepard Ndelela, a project manager in ICIPE, said the aim of this project is to ensure farmers produce their tomatoes in a safe disease free environment, using products that are safe to themselves, the environment and the consumers.

‘The first phase of this project has already been implemented in Kirinyaga County. We are here today in Narok to launch the second Phase of ISPOT project,’ said Ndelela.

Ndelela added that Narok County is in the second phase mainly because it is among the leading counties in tomato production.

Peterson Nderitu, a research officer at ICIPE described the project as one that will address the challenges that tomato farmers have been facing, ranging from poor farming practices, pest and disease infestation and post-harvest losses.

However, Nderitu said the project will eventually increase the quantity and quality of tomatoes produced by farmers.

John Nakola, a tomato farmer from Naroosura area in Narok, said the ISPOT project will boost the tomato production in the county. ‘This project, as we have heard, aims at ensuring farmers produce tomatoes and other crops in a safe manner,’ added Nakola.

Nakola called upon fellow tomato farmers to adopt this new farming technology in order to preserve human and environmental health.

This second phase in Narok County follows a successful completion of phase one of the project in Kirinyaga County, which entailed assessment and mapping out of tomato farming across the County.

ICIPE is mandated to conduct research and develop methods that are affordable to effective, selective, nonpolluting and which are affordable to resource-limited rural and urban communities.

Efforts To Restore Kakamega Forest Canopy Gets Boost

The restoration of Kakamega forest has received a major boost from the Kakamega Forest Heritage Foundation that is facilitating the restoration and conservation of deforested areas in the rain forest.

The Foundation has established a Conservation Fund, whose purpose is to facilitate the restoration and conservation of the Forest.

Through the conservation fund, the Foundation has distributed over 30,000 seedlings of both exotic and indigenous species to schools, churches, mosques and to individuals to establish woodlots on their lands that upon maturity would provide both firewood and timber for own use to reduce the need and propensity of raiding the forest for those needs.

The Fund has also, in collaboration with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) adopted over 100 hectares of the deforested area to restore and rehabilitate with strictly indigenous seedlings in an attempt to restore the forest to its original pristine condition.

The organization is working in partnership with Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa, (AGRA), Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), Kenya Prisons and The Department of Defense, Kenya Forestry Service (KFS).

Others are the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya(ICIPAK), Kenya Commercial Bank, World Rally Championship (WRC), Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), local forest associations and local schools.

The Foundation was established in 2015 as a charitable organization with the objective of complimenting the efforts of the Government of Kenya of restoring and conserving the Kakamega Forest for the welfare of the forest ecosystem.

Ahead of a major planting exercise to be presided over by the Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi at Iloro, Shinyalu sub-county, Kakamega County, so far the Fund has managed to plant 29,400 trees on 62.3 acres of the deforested areas.

The theme of the tree planting is ‘Restoring the Green Canopy’ with a call to other like-minded institutions to partner with the Foundation in restoring the Kakamega Forest canopy.

He revealed that for the last 3 years, health facilities in the county were not receiving drugs due to the huge bill of Sh. 1.8 million it was being owed, noting that he had already paid some money of which the county had received drugs worth 200 million.

Addressing members of the public who had gathered for the celebrations, the Nairobi County Senator Edwin Sifuna congratulated the Governor for bringing together all Nairobi leaders to walk and work together as leaders.

‘You have taken a bipartisan approach, we are ready to support you,’ they said.

Mwenje said Members of Parliament in Nairobi will assist the Governor to build school through the Constituency Development Fund to avoid congestion in classrooms and asked him to allocate them parcels of land for the purpose.
