PM Abiy Says Billions of Coffee, Fruit Seedlings Under Preparation for Next Planting Season


Addis Ababa: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said more than 2 billion coffee seedlings, half a billion fruit seedlings and 400 million tea plants are under preparation for the next planting season with improved focus.

The premier said on X, former twitter, that over the past year, more than 2 billion coffee seedlings, more than half a billion fruit seedlings and more than 400 million tea plants are under preparation for the next planting season with improved focus.

‘If we are able to plant these seedlings and nurture them to production, it will have a great impact on our overall economy and efforts to address climate change,’ he affirmed.

Its been more than five years now since the government of Ethiopia has embarked a massive nationwide planting of seedlings through its Green Legacy Initiative introduced by the premier.

The nation has so far planted more than 32.5 billion seedlings of various types including different kinds of fruits as part of the initiative.

tiative with the objective to help the nation’s ongoing efforts to boost agricultural productivity and ensure food self-sufficiency by mitigating the impacts of climate change.

China Becomes One of Largest Importers of Ethiopian Coffee


Addis Ababa: China became one of the largest importers of Ethiopian coffee, Ethiopian Ambassador to China Tefera Derbew said.

The ambassador delivered a keynotes speech at ‘The China (Pu’er) International Coffee Expo’ held in Yunnan province, Pu’er city with the theme of ‘Pu’er Coffee, Shared Worldwide.’

On the occasion, the ambassador highlighted the potential of Ethiopian coffee for the world and how it is important to import the product.

He delighted that the exhibition is dedicated to coffee origins, gives Ethiopia a chance as the origin place of coffee to promote one of Ethiopia’s precious gifts to the civilized world.

Coffee is part and parcel of Ethiopia’s social fabric, and any guest visiting Ethiopia will certainly feel the profound coffee culture deeply embedded in the identity of the Ethiopian people, ambassador Tefera added.

He also stated that, “being one of the world’s three main beverages, coffee is like a bridge, connecting all countries in the world, crossing borders and races, n
arrowing the distance between people in the global village, and letting culture plug in wings through coffee cultural exchanges, promoting the great integration and development of excellent cultures among all human beings in the world.”

The ambassador underscored that, today, about 3 percent of the world’s supply of coffee comes from Ethiopia, which makes Ethiopia the 1st coffee producer in Africa and the 5th-largest global.

In recent years, ‘we have witnessed a growing boost in China’s coffee market as China became one of the largest importers of Ethiopian coffee.’

Recent data show that China has now become the largest importer of Ethiopian coffee.

‘flavors which range from winy, to fruity and chocolaty are delicious players for mixtures which give a strong gratifying taste. I am sure you will taste and enjoy it,’ he concluded his speech.

Diaspora Homecoming Aims to Connect Ethiopians with Their Origins, Involve in Nat’l Affairs


Addis Ababa: The ongoing Second-Generation Ethiopians Homecoming heeding Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s call is aimed at making the diaspora engage in the affairs of the country by knowing the country and being connected to its identity, according to the Ethiopian Diaspora Service.

The premier invited the second-generation diaspora to come to their origin in three rounds from 30th December 2023 to the end of September 2024 under the theme ‘Back to your origins.’

The Diasporas from across the globe are arriving in Addis Ababa as part of the first-round homecoming organized under the motto “Connect to Your Culture.”

The Ethiopian Diaspora Service stated that the call which is an extension of the previous calls aims to bridge the gap between generations, fostering knowledge, identity, and active participation of the second generation Ethiopians in the country’s affairs.

Ethiopian Diaspora Service Diaspora Community Development Acting Director, Nabyu Solomon reminded homecoming call made by the premier in
2022 for million Ethiopians, Ethiopian origins, and friends of Ethiopia to come to Ethiopia to celebrate Gena (Ethiopian Christmas) and Eid to Eid homecoming.

Following the success of those invitations, where many responded to visit their country, this homecoming invitation was extended to the second-generation Ethiopians with a view to connect them with their roots and contribute to the nation’s development.

A nation is built by generations, emphasized Nabyu, adding this call is an opportunity to learn from our forefathers and embrace our legacy.

The aim of this call is to strengthen the bond with the country and its people by knowing the history and culture of the generation of Ethiopians and to make them participate in the affairs of their country, he stated.

To realize the premier’s call, a national committee is in place and this home coming initiative has been divided into three phases with a series of different events scheduled to be overseen by sub-committees.

Each phase promises a unique tap
estry of events designed to foster meaningful connections and celebrate shared heritage and programs have been prepared to enable the second generation diasporas to know and remember their culture.

Accordingly, the first phase dubbed ‘Connect to Your Multi-Cultural Roots’ will last from December 30, 2023 to January 29, 2024 with various events, including Ethiopia Week, Ethiopian Voices, visits, conferences and public lectures.

The second phase designated ‘Connect to Your Historical Origin’ will last from February 28, up to April 8, 2024 coinciding with the African Union Assembly and will include events related to the Victory of Adwa.

This event aims to enable members of the diaspora to learn about their history, culture, language and religion, he noted.

The third phase, ‘Leave Your Legacy and Save Your Holiday’, will last from June 17, 2024 to September 30, 2024 and will include volunteer legacy events.

The main goal of this round is to teach children, plant saplings, and undertake other extensive volu
nteer activities to make them leave their legacy in their country, Nebyu pointed out.

According to him, there will be various travel programs, visiting tourist sites, networking platforms where the second generation diaspora can share their knowledge and experience with Ethiopians.

The members of the second generation diaspora have been called upon to come back home and get to know Ethiopia and work for the development of their country.

This homecoming is not just a visit; it’s a promise to reconnect, contribute, and shape the future of Ethiopia.

Second-generation Diaspora Pledges to Provide Support for Ethiopia’s Development


Addis Ababa: The diaspora members of the second-generation pledged to provide the necessary support and work in collaboration with other communities in Ethiopia for the realization of the country’s development aspirations.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed called on the second-generation foreigners of Ethiopian origin to come home in three-rounds from 30th December 2023 to the end of September 2024.

The first-round homecoming under the motto “Connect to Your Culture” began from 30 December 2023 to 29 January 2024. And the second round homecoming dubbed “Connect to Your History” will be during the African Union annual summit in Addis Ababa.

Moreover, the second-generation foreigners of Ethiopian origin are anticipated to come in the third round from the upcoming rainy season to 30 September 2024 under the motto “Leave Your Legacy.”

Following the invitation, the second-generation Ethiopian Diaspora have begun arriving in Addis Ababa today.

Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, the diaspora were welcom
ed by senior government officials, including the Minister of Tourism, Ambassador Nasise Chali.

Approached by the Ethiopian News Agency, the diaspora members expressed their admiration for the warm welcome extended to them.

Mehret Berihun from Maryland, USA said that she felt unique feeling for being able to see her country.

Anmut Yenesew, who came from Stockholm, Sweden, said on his part that the homecoming call for the second generation of Ethiopian Diasporato will enable them to see the development endeavors being carried out in the country.

Tamnit Obaski, who came from Germany, pointed out that she planed to visit places in Addis Ababa and other parts of the country.

Another member of the diaspora, Teshome Abate, from Manchester, England, said that he has planned to celebrate Christmas and Timket (Ethiopian Epiphany) colorfully. Abate expressed his curiosity to know more about his country’s culture and history.

Abraham Belete, from Frankfurt, Germany, appreciated the warm welcoming ceremony at the
airport and he found it more than his expectation.

Abraham has been eager to visit Ethiopia in person to see about the current development works.

He also urged other Ethiopian diaspora members to accept the homecoming calls and visit their country of origin and participate in the overall development activities.

The homecoming call to the diaspora in three-round aimed at making them come back to their country to spend their vacation here, Tourism Minister, Ambassador Nasise Chali said.

She added that various events will be undertaken to make the diaspora members know their country’s history and culture.

Minor boy drowns in a sewage pond at OtaviPM Abiy shares food items with 225 Low Income Staff Members of Office of Prime Minister

OTJIWARONGO: A nine-year-old boy allegedly drowned in a sewage bond at Otavi in the Otjozondjupa Region on Thursday afternoon.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) community affairs commander in the region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha in an interview with Nampa on Thursday said the deceased’s body was retrieved by members of the public who were joined by police officers at approximately 15h40 the same day.

The deceased was then identified by his close relatives as Jimmy Renaltus Gubeb, said Mbeha.

‘It is alleged Gubeb fell into the pond at the town and he drowned,’ said Mbeha.

Mbeha added that Gubeb was a resident of the Harambe informal area at the town, and his body was transported to the Otavi State Clinic mortuary.

Police investigations in the matter continue.

Addis Ababa: The second-generation Ethiopian Diasporas from across the globe are arriving in Addis Ababa following the invitation made by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
