Government of Ethiopia, UN Country Team Express Determination to Deepen Partnership

The Government of Ethiopia and the UN Country Team are determined to deepen their partnership, a joint statement issued by the Government of Ethiopia and UN Country Team said.

After conducting constructive and productive deliberations with the United Nations Country Team, including the incoming UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov and UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Country Representative, Michael Saad, a joint statement has duly been issued.

“We will continue working for inclusive and sustainable development in Ethiopia. We reiterated our commitment to intensify our joint efforts for the immediate resumption of humanitarian aid to vulnerable communities,” the statement stated.

China Int’l Dev’t Cooperation Reiterates Commitment to Support Ethiopia’s Dev’t Goals

China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) pledged to strengthen its continued support for the successful accomplishment of Ethiopia’s development plans, CIDCA Regional Affairs Director-General Liu Junfeng said.

The Director-General affirmed that CIDCA will continue supporting efforts of Ethiopia to achieve its development goals as the country has been undertaking massive economic reforms.

Stating that strengthening international cooperation and enhancing the role of the private sector is one of the priority areas of the agency, he said Ethiopia and China have strong developmental cooperation and historic ties which is based on strong foundation especially in investment, trade agriculture, construction and other sectors.

Stressing that China’s technical support to enhance the agricultural productivity in Ethiopia is vital, he said such cooperation from his country will continue in railway infrastructure, technology transfer and industrial development as well.

The Director-General further affirmed that the agency will continue strengthening its support to Ethiopia’s economic development including the completion of the ongoing projects in the country.

Since China and Ethiopia established diplomatic ties in 1970, the two countries have forged a strong and close relationship over the years, it was learned.

Kanyetu resigns from APP with immediate effect

Suspended Secretary-General of the All People’s Party Vincent Kanyetu has resigned from the party with immediate effect.

Kanyetu announced his resignation in a short letter addressed to the party’s president Erastus Shuumbwa on Saturday afternoon.

In the letter, seen by this news agency, Kanyetu said he is taking with him 200 of his family members, noting that “The decision has come as a result of us restoring our family peace and our dignity.”

Kanyetu went on to wish the leadership of the party well and that he had a great time working for the party.

Kanyetu joined the APP in October 2015 after he was put on suspension and subsequently suspended from the then-DTA in August 2015.

Meanwhile, the decision to have Kanyetu suspended from APP’s leadership comes after his alleged affiliation with a Rundu-based pressure group called the United Namibian’s Party (UNP) was brought to light.

The party recently held a disciplinary hearing about the matter and a decision was expected to be made based on the outcome of the hearing.

Ethiopia, UAE Will Expand Scope of Cooperation: PM Abiy

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said that Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will continue expanding their scope of cooperation.

The premier bid farewell today to the president of UAE who has been on an official visit in Ethiopia.

During Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan’s stay, 17 MoU and agreements were signed between the countries to foster mutual development and prosperity.

Abiy posted that it has been a great pleasure hosting “my dear brother Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed.”

And “we will continue expanding our scope of cooperation,” he added.

Following bilateral meetings and signing of key cooperation agreements, the leaders planted seedlings, marking mutual commitment to addressing climate change in multifaceted ways.

They also officially opened the Water and Energy Exhibition which will be open for the public in the coming weeks.

The aim of the exhibition is to showcase Ethiopia’s water and energy resources and potential, it was learned.

The growing relation between the two countries is rooted in deep mutual respect and a shared vision for mutual progress and will continue collaborating in pursuit of sustainable development.

State of Emergency Inquiry Board Commences Work

The State of Emergency Inquiry Board has officially begun its work today.

Recall that the House of People’s Representatives, which endorsed the state of emergency declared in Amhara region by the Council of Ministers, on Monday approved the appointment of members of the State of Emergency Inquiry Board on same day.

Members of the State of Emergency Central Command Post and the Inquiry Board have exchanged views on the ongoing implementation of the proclamation today.

The two sides also discussed about the activities carried out and future plans.

State of Emergency Central Command Post member, Melese Alemu said on the occasion that discussion was held about joint activities to be carried out with the Inquiry Board.

According to him, detailed briefing has also been given on activities being carried out by the State of Emergency Central Command Post with a view to restoring peace.

Members of the Inquiry Board were also briefed about the rights of people arrested as per the proclamation.

Inquiry Board Chairman Azmera Andemo announced on the occasion that the Board has started work.

He added that the Board also got detailed information about the activities carried out so far by the State of Emergency Central Command Post and its future plans.

The chairman disclosed that the Board will conduct field visits in Addis Ababa and Amhara Region in the coming days.

The Board will also visit in person the arrested to assess the human rights situation, he stated.

He pledged that the Board will evaluate the implementation of the proclamation and make its findings public.
