Initiative Aimed at Addressing Complex Climatic Issues in Eastern Africa Region Unveiled

Addis Ababa: A project aimed at addressing the complex links between climate change, environmental disasters, conflict, and migration in the Eastern Africa region was launched in Addis Ababa today.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the initiative, named “Managing the Impact of Environmental Change and Conflict on Mobility in Eastern Africa through Evidence-based Inclusive Policy Dialogue and Collaborative Actions (MECMEA),” is an 18-month project funded by the EU. During the launching ceremony, Refugees and Returnees Service Director-General, Teyiba Hassen, emphasized the initiative’s importance as a united response to the intertwined issues of environmental change, conflict, and human mobility.

The director-general highlighted the region’s vulnerability to climate-induced disruptions such as droughts and floods, despite its diversity and potential. She also mentioned Ethiopia’s commitment to environmental restoration through the Green Legacy Initiative, which focuses on managing natural resources and pla
nting billions of trees.

Addis Ababa University Vice President, Jeilu Oumer, remarked that the project under the university’s guidance aims to enhance migration governance, build institutional capacity, and foster inclusive policy dialogue to effect meaningful change. He noted that the initiative seeks to address immediate regional challenges and establish long-term resilience and sustainable development.

Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center and Network President, Professor George Owiti, stated that the mission is to ensure environmental care, strengthen natural resource management, and advocate for sustainable development. The initiative is led by the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center and Network under Addis Ababa University in collaboration with key regional partners.

Professor Mekuria Argaw, Executive Director of the Horn of Africa Regional Environment Center and Network, described the center as a catalyst for collaboration among academic institutions, policymakers, civil society, communi
ties, and the private sector. Over the past 15 years, the center has implemented various regional programs and projects with lasting impacts, including ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, and community-based climate adaptation.

Through evidence-based policymaking, capacity building, and policy dialogue, MECMEA is expected to strengthen governance frameworks for climate and conflict-induced mobility across the region.
