Opuwo, Ondangwa await weekend sport tournaments

The weekend is slated to showcase some of the best football talents in the country’s northern regions, as Opuwo and Ondangwa will hold football competitions on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Kunene NamPol Sports Club, an Opuwo-based Kunene Football League Second Division club, will organise their first annual edition tourney at the Newman Katuta sports ground on Saturday, with more than 15 local and visiting football and netball teams set to compete.

Isack Kavasuva, the tournament organiser, confirmed the event to Nampa on Thursday, pointing out that preparations for the two-day event, which will also serve as a platform for exhibitors and vendors, are proceeding smoothly.

Kavasuva stated that the monies come from the club’s coffers.

A total of N.dollars 32 000 has been set aside for the event, with N.dollars 27 000 going to the football category and the remaining N.dollars 5 000 going to the netball category.

The winning netball team will walk away with N.dollars 2 500 and a trophy, the runner-up will pocket N.dollars 1 500 with the third best team to receive N.dollars 1 000 and medals.

The football category winner will get N.dollars 13 000 and a trophy, the runner-up will receive N.dollars 8 000, and the semi-final losers will each receive N.dollars 3 000. Football teams are set to register with N.dollars 1 700, while netball teams must register with N.dollars 600.

The other comparable event is scheduled for the Andimba Toivo ya Toivo sports field in Ondangwa, where the Ondangwa Masters Football Club will organise their first-ever football edition, which is expected to draw more than 60 teams in both youth and veterans categories.

According to event organiser Sandro Ithana, the competition will be able to give a platform for national leagues to search for emerging potential.

“Because we know the league is on recess, this tournament will be able to provide an opportunity for national league coaches to come scout for raw talent and for league players to come to participate as a pre-season before the league kicks off,” Ithana added.

According to Ithana, the event is open to all teams in the country.

The Ondangwa Masters administration has set aside N.dollars 44 000 for both categories, with the youth category competing for N.dollars 29 000 and the veterans for N.dollars 15 000.
