Christmas came early for children of the Thika Rescue Centre after they were treated to a day of festivities by the area MP Alice Nganga.
They shared meals, received foodstuffs and other gifts, and spent time with the legislator as well as other government officials from the area, putting a smile on their faces and giving them hope during this Christmas period.
A teacher at the school, Roda Nthenya said the event gave the children the chance to experience the festive season which has never been the case for years, as most of them do not have other family members.
She said had the MP not chipped in, this year’s festivity would have been among the dullest since the institution is going through a difficult period financially.
‘At the moment, we are struggling financially and cannot imagine what we could have given our children for the festivity. The children are happy spending time with their leaders, giving them motivation and hope,’ said Nthenya
Ng’ang’a, also the National Assembly Chair, Committee Socia
l Protection, said putting a smile to the destitute children during this festive season motivates them to make it in life.
She called on other well-wishers to share with the less fortunate during this period, saying many Kenyans are facing a difficult economic period.
The centre has more than 100 boys and some have excelled after graduating with various degrees. Others have got jobs and started living normal lives.
‘We have always been supporting children from rescue centres, ensuring that they not only learning to the highest level but also that they get jobs in the government,’ said Ng’ang’a.
She added that as a committee, they are also working on a programme to have all the centres in the country fenced, to ward off land grabbers.
‘Criminals have been salivating on land belonging to rescue centers, and this will not be entertained. We are working on a programme to have all the centres secure title deeds and fenced to keep these people off,’ said the MP.
