Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with leader of Sudan’s Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

‘Earlier today I received Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and his delegation for a discussion on securing peace and stability in the Sudan,’ said on X, the former twitter.

Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, arrived in Addis Ababa today and he was welcomed by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Demeke Mekonnen at Bole International Airport.

IGAD Reaffirms Commitment to Consolidate Endeavors in Restoring Peace, Normalcy in Sudan


Executive Secretary of IGAD, Workneh Gebeyehu said that the hope for a brighter future burns strongly within us as we endeavor to restore peace and normalcy in Sudan.

The secretary shared on social media that: ‘As we embark upon a new year and commemorate Sudan’s Independence Day, my heartfelt thoughts turn to the people of Sudan.’

Workneh added that IGAD will reinforce endeavors to restore peace and normalcy to the lives of our brothers and sisters in Sudan.

‘The hard-won independence fought for by the Sudanese people stands as a beacon that we must safeguard from dimming. Through the endured trials, the resilience of the Sudanese people shines brightly, reminding us that even this, too, shall pass,’ he stated.

Ethio-U.S. Relations One of United States’ Longest, Closest in Sub-Saharan Africa: Joint Statement


Addis Ababa: The Ethiopia-U.S. bilateral relationship has been one of the United States’ longest and closest in sub-Saharan Africa, a joint stamen issued after the bilateral meeting held today between Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs State Minister, Mesganu Arga and U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia Ervin Jose Massinga.

The statement recalled that on December 27, 1903 Emperor Menelik II and U.S. envoy Robert Skinner signed the first Ethiopia-U.S. bilateral treaty, commencing 120 years of friendship and partnership between the two nations.

Since then, the joint statement indicated that the Ethiopia-U.S. bilateral relationship has been one of the United States’ longest and closest in sub-Saharan Africa.

The two countries share deep people-to-people bonds that ground our 120 years of relations in an enduring spirit of respect, mutual understanding, and our shared aspirations for peace, security, and economic development, it added.

That spirit has propelled cooperation in health, education, agriculture and food security,
and science and the environment that continue to benefit the people of both nations, the statement further pointed out.

‘Today, State Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Mesganu Arga and U.S. Ambassador Ervin Jose Massinga met to discuss how to showcase this significant anniversary throughout the coming year as a milestone of our longstanding bilateral relations and a moment to reflect on how to strengthen the bilateral relationship for the next 120 years,’ it added.

Ethiopia’s Foreign Affairs State Minister Confers with US Ambassador


Addis Ababa: State Minister of Political and Economic Diplomacy, Ambassador Mesganu Arga, earlier this morning conferred with the Ambassador of the United States of America to Ethiopia, Ervin Jose Massinga.

The two sides exchanged views on current affairs, bilateral, regional and multilateral issues of mutual concern.

They also discussed cooperation in education, aviation, trade and people-to-people relations, among other things, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Speaking of the upcoming celebration of the 120th anniversary of the diplomatic relations, the State Minister stressed the fact that the occasion will provide unprecedented opportunities to review and upscale Ethiopia-USA diplomatic ties.

Ambassador Massinga also expressed his high hopes of the anniversary serving as a watershed moment to showcase significant milestones in the longstanding bilateral relations.

House Speaker Appreciates Efforts of Nat’l Dialogue Commission


Addis Ababa: House of People’s Representatives (HPR) Speaker, Tagesse Chafo commended the National Dialogue Commission for the efforts it has made so far to identify the main issues from the grass roots, despite the challenges.

The speaker made the remark at a meeting the HPR Democratic Affairs Standing Committee, the National Dialogue Commission and other pertinent bodies held today.

During the meeting, the Democratic Affairs Standing Committee presented its field observation report on the implementation of the National Dialogue Commission.

The Democratic Affairs Standing Committee had visited Sidama, Harari, and Benishangul-Gumuz regions as well as the head office of the commission.

Representative of the standing committee appreciated the activities being carried out to give awareness, but pointed out the lack of sufficient awareness among the public about the significance of the dialogue..

He also said the cooperation of leaders from region down to woreda with the commission has created favorable work
ing environment.

Among the problems the committee identified are low participation of women and absence during agenda designing.

Moreover, the over expectation of the public from the commission to solve all the local problems is worrisome.

HPR Speaker Tagesse Chafo commended the National Dialogue Commission for the efforts its so far to identify the main issues from the grass roots.

He further called on stakeholders to work together with the National Dialogue Commission to identify the main issues that need attention in the dialogue so that the process can be completed at the desired time.

The support being given to the commission by the people shows that Ethiopians have a strong desire to resolve their differences through dialogue, he noted, adding that the government has obligation to fulfill its promise to the people.

Therefore, it will provide all the necessary support for the success of the dialogue in keeping with the institution’s neutrality.

National Dialogue Chief Commissioner Professor Mesfin
Araya stated that the commission has been carrying out various activities in collaboration with various stakeholders at federal and regional levels to make the national dialogue successful.

According to him, the commission is in the process of selecting participants and designing agendas from the grass roots.

Selection of participants has also been underway in different parts of the country, the commissioner said, stressing that the commission is exerting maximum efforts to include all stakeholders in the dialogue.

The chief commissioner called on the media to intensify the effort of informing and reminding the society about the purpose of the National Dialogue Commission and its activities.

Officials of the Government Communication Service and the mass media who participated in the discussion affirmed that they will play their roles to realize the dialogue.

Ethiopia Should Reclaim its Right, Unlock Red Sea for Prosperity: AAU Interim President


Addis Ababa: Ethiopia should ask for reclaiming its right and unlock the Red Sea for achieving prosperity, Addis Ababa University Interim President Samuel Kifle said.

A joint workshop entitled ‘Ethiopia’s Strategic Pursuit: Unlocking the Red Sea- a Journey Through History, Geopolitics and International Law’ organized by Samara University in collaboration with Dire Dawa, Addis Ababa, Jigjiga, and Mekelle universities kicked off today.

In his opening remark, the interim president of Addis Ababa University stated that the history of human civilization and the fight for global power supremacy have affected the nations neighboring the Red Sea and also invited others from distance.

Thus, he stressed ‘the Red Sea holds a high order in history, geopolitics and international trade.’

‘For us, Ethiopians, the Red Sea was and still has remained to be part of our history, both as a curse and blessing. Now it seems a new world order is in the making that we should ask for reclaiming our right and unlock the Red Sea for
our prosperity,’ Samuel noted.

According to him, getting the facts right and informing others about Ethiopia’s pursuit for a fair access to the Red Sea is essential that needs due attention.

Samara University President, Mohammed Usman said on his part that, as academic institutions, universities must create a platform to discuss and direct the right path of mutual benefit in the Red Sea corridor.

‘Ethiopia, as a landlocked country, cannot hold itself aloof from emerging regional issues that could significantly affect its vital interest. Given its close proximity to the Red Sea and other adjacent states, as well as its growing economic demands and regional security concerns, Ethiopia must pursue peaceful means based on the principle of mutual benefit and expedition of regional integration to secure its access to the Red Sea,’ the President elaborated.

He added that the task at hand is to clearly define Ethiopia’s strategic interest towards the Red Sea.
