Law Enforcement Operations in Amhara Paves Way for Development Undertakings


State of Emergency Central Command Post in Amhara region conducted today performance evaluation of law enforcement operations and restructuring of administration over the last five months.

Prevalence of peace, resumption of public services and socioeconomic as well as development activities in the region are being restored fully, the command post said.

Amhara Region Peace and Security Bureau Head, Desalegn Tasew said through the joint efforts of the National Defense Force and the public, the region is returning to normalcy.

By now, the peace and security of the region has been by far improved, he said, adding that the imminent danger posed on the region has been foiled.

He added that the security arrangement of the region has been re-established to fully discharge its responsibility.

The People in the region are making demands for enforcement of law and to this effect, they are working jointly with the security forces, he said.

Prosperity Party Office Head of the Amhara Region, Yirga Sisay said on his
part that the restructuring of administration up to lower level has been carried out over the five months.

The security structure of the region has been reestablished, he said, adding that public forums were conducted and consensus reached.

Development activities are underway in the region, he said, adding urgent public demands are also being fulfilled at all levels.

Commander-in-chief of Eastern Command, Lieutenant General, Mohammed Tesemma, said that the extremist group’s intention of seizing power by force in the region has been completely reversed.

The Lt. General added that the law enforcement measures have brought about concrete results in the region.

The state of emergency command post has set direction to complete the remaining tasks before timeframe of the proclamation ends.

Commission Holds Discussions with Diaspora Residing in Africa, Middle East and Europe


The National Dialogue Commission said it has held discussions with the diaspora communities residing in Africa, Middle East and Europe.

Spokesperson of the commission, Tibebu Tadesse briefed the media today on the recent developments and efforts undertaken by the commission.

He said that the commission has been in the process of selecting participants and designing an agenda by gathering ideas from the grass roots across the nation.

Moreover, he added that the commission has been carrying out various activities with collaboration of various stakeholders at federal and regional levels in the process of realizing the national dialogue.

He stressed that the selection of participations and awareness will continue he said, adding it will start work on identifying an agenda.

On the other hand, the spokesperson elaborated the commission has also held discussions with diaspora residing in Africa, Middle East and Europe.

During discussions at various times with diaspora, the commission explained its mandate and
on ways how the diaspora communities support the ongoing national dialogue process, he stated.

They briefed on the basic concept of national dialogue and its benefits for the country.

The commission will continue to hold similar discussions with diaspora communities in other parts of the world and collect ideas that will be input for the national dialogue process, he added.

Recall that the government established the National Dialogue Commission aimed at resolving challenges in Ethiopia through dialogue and create national consensus.

University President Stresses Need for Research-Based Deliberations on Access to Sea


Academic and research-based deliberations will play a significant role in setting out Ethiopia’s genuine intention on win-win approach for access to sea, Samara University President Mohammed Usman said.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, the president said the workshop organized by Samara University, in collaboration with Dire Dawa, Addis Ababa, Jigjiga, and Mekelle universities on the Red Sea will serve as impetus for cooperation among the community within the Red Sea.

The academia have the responsibility to distinguish the fact and fiction that gear up around Ethiopia’s demand for access to the sea, he noted, adding that the joint workshop to be conducted tomorrow will put forth mutually beneficial insights.

The president stressed the need to focus on turning the issue of the Red sea from competition to a topic of tangible cooperation.

‘We have regional agendas of integrating the region… We the Red Sea community have the same culture. If you take the Afar, this can be taken as an input to enhance the
regional cooperation and integration,’ the university president elaborated.

Speaking of the geographic proximity to the Red Sea, the president pointed out that Samara University has extra responsibility to carry out scientific and research to ensure mutual understanding, development and prosperity in the nation’s demand to gain access to sea.

‘As an institution, the Samara University which is closer to the Red Sea has a unique role in initiating research activity and bringing stakeholders and other universities to help the communities around the Red Sea,’ he said.

Cognizant to its aspiration of fostering the mutual benefit of the Afar community within the Red Sea, the president revealed that Samara University has been providing capacity building training on port service management to 20 Djiboutians.

The joint workshop that opens tomorrow will dwell on the topic ‘Ethiopia’s Strategic Pursuit: Unlocking the Red Sea — a Journey through History, Geopolitics and International Law.’

University Scholars Underscore Legitimacy of Ethiopia’s Quest for Access to Sea, Alternative Ports


Ethiopia has historical, geographical and economical rights to demand access to sea and alternative ports, Arbaminch University scholars said.

Arbaminch University scholars held a panel discussion under the theme ‘Access to Sea, Path to Development’ today.

On the occasion, Arbaminch University President, Damitew Darza stressed the need to intensify diplomatic efforts to realize Ethiopia’s interest.

He also underlined the importance of strong stance among all Ethiopians, including scholars, on the need to have access to the sea and alternative ports.

Noting that Ethiopia had enjoyed its own sea outlets, he said geopolitical instability of the region forced the country to loss its benefits.

However, the scholar added that Ethiopia has historical, geographical and economical rights to demand for access to sea and alternative ports.

Ethiopia should pursue all available peaceful mechanisms with a view to realizing its interest in the region, the president underscored, stressing the need to carry out inte
nsive diplomatic efforts.

A scholar in hydrology, Abdela Kemal said depriving a country with a population of 120 million sea access is injustice.

As a result, it has been encountering challenges in its economic development due to the high cost of port services.

Noting that Ethiopia’s population is expected to double after 30 years, the scholar pointed out the urgency of response to the nation’s quest for access to sea.

He urged scholars to play their role in attaining the country’s interests.

At the panel, the scholars also discussed wide ranging issues, including the importance of shared development in the region, Ethiopia’s quest for access to sea in relation to international laws, geopolitical and foreign relations.

WINDHOEK: The Ministry of Defence and Veterans affairs (MODVA) has cautioned war veterans about a fraudulent scheme involving individuals presenting themselves as ministry officials, specifically targeting veterans of the National Liberation struggle for their banking details.

The ministry said in a press statement issued on Monday that the scammers are claiming to pay out pending individual veteran projects. The ministry’s Head of Public Relations, Petrus Shalumbu, has since urged veterans to not provide their personal banking details or information to anybody making such claims.

All information required by the ministry should be only submitted strictly at the MODVA’s 14 regional offices countrywide,’ he said.

Furthermore, MODVA urged that veterans of the national liberation struggle to report any individual pretending to be an official from MODVA requesting their private banking details to their nearest police station.

‘MODVA reminds veterans of the national liberation struggle that as of now payouts of
projects for veterans of the liberation struggle will continue with the same prices as communicated to the veterans at the beginning of the cash payment program,’ Shalumbu said.
