Addis Ababa: African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat said Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere’s legacy encapsulates the essence of Pan Africanism, profound wisdom, and service to Africa.
In a heartfelt ceremony held today, the African Union (AU) paid tribute to the late Julius Nyerere, one of Africa’s most iconic figures, by erecting his statue in front of a prominent building named after him at a side event of the 37th African Union summit, which is currently taking place in Addis Ababa.
In attendance were Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, African Union Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, African Union Current Chairperson Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia as well as leaders of various African countries, officials of regional institutions and other invited guests.

e continent.
Moussa Faki Mahamat said Nyerere has played a key role in the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in 1963, a milestone event in our pursuit of African unity.
Julius Nyerere, who is known as the “Father of Tanzania”, is one of the most prominent figures in the struggle for the independence of African countries from colonial rule.
He praised Nyerere’s instrumental role in the establishment of OAU in 1963, a pivotal moment in Africa’s pursuit of unity. Faki Mahamat quoted Nyerere’s powerful words from the inaugural OAU summit, emphasizing the importance of African solidarity and progress.
Recognizing Nyerere’s unwavering commitment to freedom and justice, Faki Mahamat acknowledged his pivotal role in supporting liberation movements across Africa.
Tanzania, under Nyerere’s leadership, became a sanctuary for these movements, offering support and shelter to those fighting for independence and equality. The Organization of African Unity Liberation Committee found a home in Tanz
ania until the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa.
Beyond his contributions to African unity, Nyerere’s legacy as a peacemaker and mediator in African conflicts was also highlighted.
Faki Mahamat praised Nyerere’s invaluable role in resolving the crisis in Burundi and his continued dedication to providing wise counsel and guidance to the African Union until his passing.
To honor Nyerere’s remarkable legacy, the AU announced the renaming of a prominent building to the Mwalimu Nyerere Political Affairs Peace and Security building.
The decision was made following a proposal by the late President Hage Geingob of Namibia, who tragically passed away recently. The building will serve as a lasting tribute to Nyerere’s wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment to peace and security in Africa.
The ceremony concluded with heartfelt words of gratitude from Faki Mahamat, expressing hope that the spirit of Mwalimu Nyerere would guide the important work conducted within the newly named building.
The renaming o
f the building stands as a testament to Africa’s deep respect and admiration for Julius Nyerere, who dedicated his life to the advancement of the continent and the principles of unity, freedom, and justice. It serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of a visionary leader and the ongoing pursuit of a united and prosperous Africa.
