Girls’ education: World Bank lauds KDSG for taking ownership of AGILE project

The World Bank has commended the Kaduna State Government for taking ownership of its supported Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) project.

The Bank’s Country Director for Nigeria, Mr Shubham Chaudhuri, gave the commendation at the official inauguration of the project in Kaduna on Friday.

Chaudhuri, who was represented virtually by the bank’s Senior Education Specialist, Aisha Garba, also praised Gov. Nasir El-Rufai for the support to ensure the success of the project in the state.

Describing the project as a “huge success” in Kaduna State, Chaudhuri said that supporting women and girls in Nigeria was at the top of the World Bank agenda.

According to him, AGILE is one of the biggest projects in the bank with $1.2 billion.

“This is to demonstrate the commitment of the bank to the development agenda of enhancing education opportunities and empowerment of young girls and women in Nigeria.

“We appreciate the full cooperation and partnership of stakeholders, and we will continue to support the government of Kaduna state in achieving this important agenda.”

Earlier, the National Project Coordinator, Hajiya Amina Haruna, explained that the AGILE project was the initiative of the Federal Government with funding support from the World Bank.

Haruna said that the project aimed to ensure adolescent girls access quality secondary education, through enhanced learning, digital literacy and life skills which empowered and assured better life chances and experience.

She said that the project, which disbursement began in February 2022, was being implemented in Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Kebbi, Ekiti, Borno and Plateau states, adding that the project would be extended to other states soon.

The national project co-ordinator said that so far, Kaduna State made a giant stride towards the achievement of the project objective and commended the State Project Implementation Unit for the efforts.

She urged the relevant stakeholders to support the implementation of the project for the beneficiaries to reap the full benefits of the project.

Inaugurating the project, Gov. El-Rufai pointed out that the talents of girls were being wasted either by not educating them, getting them out of school, or subjecting them to early marriages.

He explained that his decision to appoint many women in his cabinet as deputy governor, commissioners and head of departments and agencies was not by accident.

According to him, the step was a deliberate effort to inspire young girls to be whoever they aspire to be.

He explained that the AGILE project was specifically designed to encourage and promote girl child education, which he equally described as one of the most successful World Bank financing projects in the state.

On her part, the Commissioner for Education, Hajiya Halima Lawal, said that the project has currently reduced gender disparity in secondary school to less than one per cent.

Lawal, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Haliru Soba, added that the project had equally reduced the distance to the nearest secondary school to less than a kilometre.

She added that enrolment of girls in secondary school had equally improved due to the project.

A virtual presentation of the achievements recorded so far by the State Project Implementation Unit showed that a 779 classrooms were renovated in the state.

The report also indicated that 2,629 Water Sanitation and Hygiene facilities were constructed and rehabilitated in schools, 46,252 sets of furniture provided, while five schools have fully fenced and five currently ongoing.

It also showed that the project equally renovated Government Girls Secondary School Kawo, and renovation of Barewa College Zaria, is ongoing, while 155 new secondary schools will be built.

“The project is establishing safe spaces across 142 schools with girls being trained in leadership, self- agency, nutrition, menstrual hygiene, safeguarding against gender-based violence, reproductive health and climate change and action.

“Also, a total of 6,250 students are currently participating in the project’s digital literacy programme while 35,575 girls have received scholarships.

“AGILE project is also supporting 550 secondary schools with information and communication technology infrastructure and devices for the delivery of digital literacy,” the report indicated.

The Project Coordinator in the state, Hajiya Maryam Dangaji, ascribed the successes recorded so far to teamwork, stakeholders’ collaboration, and the overwhelming support from Gov. El-Rufai and his Executive Council.

World Bank, Ethiopia Working to Provide Electricity to More than 56 million people in Ethiopia

World Bank disclosed that it is working in partnership with Ethiopian Electric Power to provide electric power to more than 56 million people in Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Electric Power Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Ashebir Balcha urged the bank to intensify its partnership with the Ethiopian Electric Power.

The remarks were made today at a training program organized by the World Bank to modernize the Ethiopian Electric Power institutional capacity and discuss on its strategic plans.

Erik Fernstrom, Practice Manager at the World Bank East Africa Region said the Bank is working in partnership with the Ethiopian Electric Power to provide electric power to more than 56 million people in Ethiopia.

He stressed the need to make efforts in order to address the challenges that might encounter in the efforts to expedite the ongoing works.

According to him, the training will help to bring strategic ideas and enhance partnership.

Ethiopian Electric Power Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Ashebir Balcha has also called up on the bank to continue its support.

During the occasion, the three years plan of Ethiopian Electric Power in the production of electric power, construction of transmission lines and distribution stations has been presented for discussion.

The three days training will discuss on selected topics vital for the effective implementation of the strategies, it was learned.

Ethiopia Striving to Become Self-sufficient in Sugar Production in Five Years

The Ethiopian Sugar Industry Group revealed that concerted efforts have been carried out to completely replace the country’s demand for sugar with domestic production in the upcoming five years.

Ethiopia has planned to increase sugar production from the current 3.6 million quintals to 13 million quintals in the next five years.

Reta Demeke, Public Relations and Participation Head at the Ethiopian Sugar Industry Group told ENA that the domestic production and supply of sugar has not been matching the ever-growing demand of the public.

Following this, Reta stated that the Ethiopian Sugar Industry Group was re-established in March 2022 with the intention to match the supply and demand of sugar production.

The head added that since the industry group was re-established, it has been working hard on solutions by identifying the bottlenecks that caused the decline in sugarcane production and the raising in production costs.

Attention has been given to expanding the irrigation infrastructure for the newly built sugar factories.

Therefore, maximum efforts are being intensified to fully meet the domestic demand and replace sugar production imports beginning in 2025, the head explained.

“The country has embarked on a strategic plan so that the demand for sugar production can be covered domestically. A five-year strategic plan is introduced to identify the bottlenecks for the reduction of sugar products and the reasons for the increase in production costs. Therefore, the strategy is for her to overcome these difficulties. …….. Another issue is to expand irrigation development infrastructures, especially in new projects, to increase their coverage and yield of sugarcane productivity. We are working on a plan that will help us to stop importing sugar after 2025.”

In addition to the production of sugarcane cultivated by the factories themselves, he also stated that there is a practice of buying sugarcane cultivated by farmers and associations in their respective areas.

Indicating that there are currently eight sugar factories in Ethiopia, the head said that these factories are working to produce more than 12 million quintals of sugar annually in the next five years.

Construction of Modern Shedes with Cost of 7.7 Billion Birr Underway in Addis Ababa

The construction of modern shedes to be used for micro and small enterprises as well as other businesses in Addis Ababa is underway with a cost of 7.7 billion Birr, Mayor of the City Administration, Adanech Abiebie said.

The Mayor disclosed this today during her meeting with women in the capital to discuss on ways to ensuring their economic and other benefits.

During the occasion, the participants have expressed that the projects being implemented by the government to ensure equal benefits for women are encouraged.

They mentioned that they have been benefiting from the various development projects being carried out in the capital to improve their likelihoods.

Urban agriculture and school feeding programs are some of the projects mentioned by the participants.

Mayor of City Administration, Adanech Abiebie said there has been a real change in school feeding program and other activities that are implemented to ease the pressure on women in terms of decision-making and leadership.

According to the Mayor, construction of modern shedes to be used for various businesses in Addis Ababa is underway with a cost of 7.7 billion Birr.

Noting that Addis Ababa is the seat of international diplomatic community, she said several facilities are being built for micro, small enterprises as well as other kinds of businesses in a manner that fit the existing realities of city.

Accordingly, works are underway to replace old business areas built with plastics by modern shades.

The Mayor added the facilities are expected to help ensure the benefit of women in the capital.

On the other, she stated various activities are being carried out to address the questions of good governance and development step by step in the capital.

The mayor urged women to play their part to ensure lasting peace, which is the basis for the development of the country and the benefit of all citizens.

French Gov’t Committed to Support Implementation of Ethiopia’s Low Emission Dev’t Strategy: Ambassador

The French government is committed to be partner of the Ethiopian government for the implementation of the Long Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS), French Ambassador to Ethiopia, Rémi Maréchaux said.

It is to be recalled that the government of Ethiopia officially launched Long Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) this week with the view to overcoming climate change related challenges.

The overarching objective of Ethiopia’s LT-LEDS strategy is to help the government of Ethiopia pursue a green growth pathway by keeping its carbon emissions target to net zero by 2050 entailing an increased climate resilience and delivery of multiple economic and social benefits.

The strategy is a key tool in bridging Ethiopia’s sustainable development and climate mitigation and adaptation objective, following a holistic long term planning approach, it is indicated.

In an exclusive interview with ENA, French Ambassador to Ethiopia, Rémi Maréchaux said we have supported the drafting of this strategy and now we intent to be partner of the Ethiopian government for the implementation of the strategy.

He added that the efforts of the Ethiopian government are very important and we are pleased and proud to be able to support the launch of this LD-LEDS strategy that was conducted by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI ) with the funding of French government.

“Soon after the Paris conference on climate change and the Paris agreement, Ethiopia was one of the first countries in the world to adopt its national determined contributions strategy. It is important now to develop in detail this strategy though different scenarios and different priorities,” he said.

According to the ambassador, the priority of this study is critical regarding the continuation of the effort to reforestation, so that is one aspect and also the development of electricity for many uses to substitute other sources of energy and then improvement of the efficiency of agriculture sector.

“What is important today is just to acknowledge that Ethiopia is one of the least emission countries with a good energy mix and a lot of renewable energy. It doesn’t mean that in the future, they can be risk depending on the development strategy to see carbon dioxide emissions.”

He noted that the strategy is clear and it is important to have engagement of all for its implementation.

The strategy outlines the priorities for attracting international and private sector financing for green, low-carbon and climate-resilient projects over the near and long term.

The Ethiopian LT-LEDS development process was led by the ministry of planning and development.

The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), an international, intergovernmental organization championing the causes of climate change. Green growth and inclusive development provided technical assistance with the fund secured from the Agence Francaise de Development (AFD).

Ethiopia’s LT-LEDS is well aligned with the national long term development objectives and initiatives including the10 year prospective development plans of the country.

When the LT-LEDS is fully implemented, Ethiopia’s GDP will increase by 66 percent compared to the current growth in the coming 35 years.

For Ethiopia, reaching the net-zero emission targets in 2050, the total investment requirements of the LT-LEDS actions is estimated to be at least around 157 billion USD, Ministry of Finance Said.

PM Abiy Launches Annual House Renovations Program for Impoverished

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has launched the annual house renovations program for the impoverished this morning.

The Prime Minister launched the 2023 annual home renovations program for impoverished communities in the Aware area along with First Lady Zinash Tayachew.

The premier called upon all to join the annual housing renovations program effort.

He also said that “the heavy rains we have witnessed in the past weeks ought to encourage all of us to extend a helping hand to those in need.”
