Hippo Capsizes Canoe in Malawi, Leaving 1 Person Dead, More Than 20 Missing

A one-year-old boy is dead and more than 20 people are missing in southern Malawi after a canoe carrying 37 people flipped when it was hit by a charging hippopotamus.

Police say 13 people swam to the shore of the Mtayamoyo River, which in the Chichewa language means “a place where lives are lost.”

The police spokesperson in Malawi’s Nsanje district said the incident happened about 7 a.m. Monday when 37 people were crossing the river on a large canoe to work in their gardens.

Police Sub-Inspector Agnes Zalakoma, speaking to VOA via the WhatsApp, said the death toll is expected to rise as police detectives and rescue teams search for the missing people.

The canoe accident is the third deadly incident on the river in three years.

“Mtayamoyo means ‘death trap,’ said Gladys Ganda, lawmaker for the area. “You cross that river at your own risk because it’s infested with crocodiles, it’s infested with hippos and the canoes that are operating around that area are not motorboats. So, when you are crossing, you actually know that I am doing this at my own risk. I have done that before, and it’s very dangerous to do that.”

Ganda said the accidents could be avoided by constructing a bridge across the river.

“Mtayamoyo bridge has to be constructed and probably other bridges that would take us into the fields,” she said. “But Mtayamoyo bridge is a must, it’s not a luxury anymore. That is a necessity, it has to reduce the deaths that are happening around this area.”

In the meantime, locals have asked to have some of the animals removed from the area. Ganda said a rising hippo population in particular is posing a food insecurity threat, as the animals are also destroying crops.

Brighton Kumchedwa, director of the Department of Parks and Wildlife in Malawi, told VOA that his department is aware of the problem facing people in Nsanje. But he said moving hippos out of the area is not an easy task, and there are certain international obligations which Malawi must not violate.

“Because what you need to do is to sedate these animals or to put them to ‘temporary death, or sleep’ so that they are easily moved,” Kumchedwa said. “These are water residents, so the moment you sedate the animal … obviously it is [prone] to die, so it is not a simple job.”

Hippopotamuses are some of the deadliest animals in Africa, killing an estimated 500 people per year.

Kumchedwa said his department will deploy a hunter to offer protection to people in Nsanje district under threat of animal attacks.

Chinese Ambassador Calls on Chinese Investors to Engage in Ethiopia’s Manufacturing Sector

China’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Zhao Zhiyuan recommended that Chinese business people invest in Ethiopia’s rewarding manufacturing sector.

The ambassador told ENA that Ethiopia has great potential for Chinese investors to engage in the rewarding manufacturing sector.

Noting that Ethiopia has great potentials in every area, mentioning the industry and agriculture sectors, Zhao pointed out that especially the manufacturing sector is favorable and rewarding for Chinese investors.

“Ethiopia has great potential in every area; in agriculture, in industry and in other areas,” Zhao observed.

For him, the country’s huge youth population is a great potential for rewarding investment in manufacturing industries.

“Ethiopia is the great country with the huge population , especially with the very young people—this is your great potential,” he said, adding that the improving policy and services towards industrialization are also crucial for investment in manufacturing.

“The industrialization is the path to modernization,” the ambassador underlined. “So in the manufacturing sector, I encourage more Chinese companies to come here to do more work with our Ethiopian friends. I think this is a great potential,” he said.

“The youth group is very important to the manufacturing sector and good service and policy are also very important to this sector.”

Chinese investors could, for example, engage in food processing, pharmaceutical and agricultural productions in Ethiopia, he pointed out.

According to him, the general Chinese investment in Ethiopia is increasing from time to time.

“Now we are designing several very important projects with local governments and federal government ministries to promote and establish some special zones in the industrial parks,” the ambassador said.

Stating that Trade is also the basis of the Ethio-China economic relations, the ambassador noted that the Chinese Government is implementing policies that encourage the entry of high-quality Ethiopian agricultural and industrial products to the Chinese markets to boost trade exchange.

He pointed out that China has recently allowed zero-tariff entry of several thousands of Ethiopian products to its markets.

The ambassador also stressed the need to study the way how to make high-quality Ethiopian agricultural and industrial products go to China.

“We should study the way how to make the high-quality Ethiopia’s agricultural and industrial products go to China.”

The political, economic and people-to-people relationships are growing and expanding under the current leaderships of the two countries, according to the ambassador, and the relationship and ties in every area of cooperation will improve better in the future.

Ellembelle District scholarship project supports more than 360 beneficiaries

Mr Kwasi Bonzo, the Ellembelle District Chief Executive, has encouraged beneficiaries of the District Scholarship Project to help break the cycle of poverty and change the low social class order in the district.

He said: ‘As seeds of progress don’t inherit poverty…you are blessed to be part of this opportunity to make a lifetime changes in the district and I urge you to break the cycle now’.

Mr Bonzo was speaking at the launch of the 2023 Ellembelle District Scholarship programme for over 360 beneficiaries at Esiama at the weekend.

The 150, 000 Ghana cedis Scholarship has the Ghana Gas company providing the initial capital of 100,000 Ghana cedis.

The beneficiaries are studying in various tertiary institutions across the country and are to enjoy all tuition, hostel and other expenses paid through the scholarship, depending on academic performance within the period of study.

The beneficiaries, who accepted postings to the remote parts of the district, stand the chance of having all expenses paid in their master’s programme.

‘This is not free lunch from Ghana Gas, neither are they Father Christmas, but a key contribution to the human capital development in the district…please make this opportunity count,’ Mr Bonzo said.

Madam Awo Amissah French, the District Magistrate, told the beneficiaries to reinforce education as a tool of development and an opportunity for them to improve upon their livelihoods.

‘You now have the moral onus to eschew mediocrity in your studies to become part of the crop of people making changes in the globe, prepare your minds and hearts also to give back to society,’ she said.

Mr Wilfred Katey Adodoadji, the District Director of Education, called on the beneficiaries to accept postings to schools in the area to halt the teacher-student deficiency in the district.

Mr Stephen Donkor, the Corporate Affairs Manager, Ghana Gas, who represented Dr Ben Asante, the Chief Executive Officer of the Company, said the company was proud to be associated with a life-changing experience like the scholarship scheme.

He said the company was also undertaking many social investment programmes, including the refurbishment of markets and the construction of a new school facility, to improve the lives of the people.

Changing Health And Economic Concerns Push Tobacco Farmers To Avocado Growing

In recent times, the world has witnessed a shift towards a more health-conscious society. This trend has led to the adoption of healthier eating habits, including the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables.

The changing market demands and health concerns have left many farmers struggling to make ends meet, especially non-food crops growers.

In Migori County, the new trend has hit hard on tobacco farming which has been a staple cash crop in the area’s economy for decades.

However, a new initiative has emerged within the region that aims to provide farmers with an alternative crop that can help them diversify their income streams and improve their health.

British American Tobacco (BAT) Company Kenya, a non-indigenous entity, has taken this cue to introduce avocado farming to tobacco farmers in Migori County to diversify their income sources and improve their economic and health needs.

To achieve this noble course, the company has declared its intention to distribute avocado seedlings to tobacco farmers in the region who have for a long time only planted the crop (avocado) as a decorative fruit plant within their farms and homes not knowing that it can be a source of livelihood.

In recent months, the avocado fruit has gained significant popularity and has been touted as a superfood due to its numerous health benefits.

With a ready market both domestically and internationally, BAT now hopes that by introducing the crop to its farmers, the beneficiaries will be able to improve their livelihoods and reduce their dependence on tobacco as their main source of income.

‘Starting this month, BAT will give out thousands of free avocado seedlings to our tobacco farmers with a view to have them grow this crop in some of their plots as they continue with tobacco farming,’ said Mr. William Okello, one of the many company field officers.

The negative health impacts of tobacco on farmers and those consuming its sticks and fermented leafs have become the campaigning tools to make a paradigm shift to alternative safe crops such as avocado that in recent years have hit the market with attractive prices and high demand.

Other than its effects on farmers’ health, tobacco use is associated with a wide range of health problems, including several types of cancer and other chronic diseases that affect smokers, among them, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) – bronchitis and emphysema.

COPD can lead to difficulty in breathing, chronic coughing, and other respiratory symptoms.

Many countries are enforcing strict regulations on the tobacco industry making it slowly adopt mixed farming bringing on board safe crops, preferably avocado.

These regulations have made it more difficult for tobacco farmers to grow and sell their crops, and many have been forced to look for alternative sources of income.

‘Influenced by the ever-rising global demand for avocados, it would be suicidal for a company like BAT Kenya to ignore this crop’, said Mr Okello, adding that it’s why they have decided to weave its growth alongside tobacco.

Avocado is considered a ‘superfood’ due to its high nutritional value, and its popularity especially in Western countries has ignited a big demand from Kenya, and Migori is not spared.

Its introduction has generated significant opportunities for farmers in the region, where the climate and soil conditions are ideal for growing the fruit.

Avocado farming has several advantages over tobacco farming. For instance, avocado is a perennial crop that can yield fruit for up to 50 years with proper care.

This means that farmers can enjoy a more stable source of income for long and avoid the cycle of planting and harvesting. Furthermore, avocados require less water and pesticides than tobacco, making them a more sustainable crop.

But perhaps the most significant advantage of avocado farming is its potential for improving farmers’ health. By contrast, tobacco farming is notoriously dangerous, with farmers exposed to harmful chemicals and at risk of developing respiratory illnesses such as ‘green tobacco sickness.’

Mary Atieno, a 45-year-old widow and mother of five, has been farming tobacco for over a decade but says that all she has gained out of this activity is ill health as a result of the harmful chemicals.

‘While I relied on tobacco growing as my sole source of income, it did not change my poor income to anything good, instead it became a great cost to my health,’ she rued during an interview, explaining.

‘I have been suffering from breathing problems and chest pains for years now. With very little money in my pocket, I have to take medication every day just to remain alive.’

Additionally, the chemicals she uses to grow and the method of curing the tobacco leafs have greatly affected her eyesight.

But now Atieno is excited about the prospect of switching to avocado farming noting that she will spend less on medical bills and also, she will not spend much energy in producing avocado like in the much laborious tobacco farming.

Similarly, John Ouko, a 35-year-old father of three, has also been farming tobacco for many years.

John says that while he has been able to eke a living from the crop, the market for tobacco has become increasingly unpredictable in recent years.

‘Sometimes I am able to sell my tobacco for a good price, but other times I have to sell it for much less than its worth. It’s hard to plan for the future when you don’t know how much money you will be making,’ he says.

John believes that avocado farming would provide a more stable source of income for him and his family once the crop starts to yield.

‘With avocados, I know that I will be able to sell my crop for a good price every year and use the funds to do other investments,’ he says.
