Government Committed To Long Term Solution To Floods, CS Owalo

The government is committed to finding solution to perennial floods in western Kenya, Information, Communications and The Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary, Eliud Owalo has said.

Owalo said that the solution entails harnessing the excess waters to ensure sustainable food security through irrigation and also desilting some of the rivers to contain back flow that has been displacing thousands.

On the short term, he said, the government was distributing relief food to the displaced, adding that the ministry of interior and National government adminstration will also move in soon to assist the flood victims with blankets, mosquito nets and other supplies.

He was speaking in Siaya County on Monday while presiding over distribution of relief supplies to displaced families in Ugunja, Alego / Usonga and Bondo constituencies.

The CS, who was flanked by Siaya county commissioner, Jim Njoka and local United Democratic Alliance officials, among them Fredrick Oyugi Dor, the UDA coordinator in Siaya, said poor planning was to blame for the displacement of people by the floods.

‘We need to do mapping so that we are aware of designated agriculture zones, residential areas and river banks and lake shores where people should not encroach,’ said the cabinet secretary who addressed the media at Dibuoro primary school grounds in Alego / Usonga constituency.

He said that the current state of affairs where people live anywhere because of improper planning and lack of enforcement of the laws must stop.

Owalo said that the Kenya Kwanza government was now focused on serving Kenyans and will not engage on empty rhetoric.

‘President William Samoei Ruto has said time and again that the period for politics is over and we are now committed to tackling problems affecting the citizens,’ he said.

During the occasion, CS Owalo was accompanied by the chairman of the Sacco Societies regulatory Authority (SASRA) chairman, Jack Ranguma and the chairperson of the Postal Corporation of Kenya board of directors, Mrs Rose Nyamunga among others.

Young Innovators Urged To Embrace Technology To Market Their Works

Nakuru county government is crafting friendly policies for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises that will assist youths to patent their creative ideas and help them partner with like-minded industrialists to commercialize their talents.

County Executive Committee Member (CECM) in charge of Youth, Gender, Culture, Sports and Social Services Josephine Atieno Achieng said they were encouraging youths to embrace the value of innovation and entrepreneurship as a means of creating employment.

This, she added, is through creating a conducive environment in which innovations could be developed to spur the entrepreneurial spirit.

‘We are committed to providing a platform for our young and creative innovators to showcase their transformational ideas and ventures and linking them with industry captains and investors who can put money in the startups in exchange for equity,’ stated Ms Achieng.

She said that youth must be empowered and encouraged to exploit their talents and seek to provide solutions to the ever-present challenges facing the country including unemployment, food security, national security and health among others.

Ms Achieng pointed out that locally engineered solutions are likely to be more affordable compared to imported ones adding that local solutions ensure there is skill and knowledge retention for the local people, as opposed to an imported solution that will never let Kenyans have control of what they sell.

‘Our youths must be empowered with skills geared on shifting their mindsets from job seekers to job creators and owners of capital,’ said the CECM.

She said this initiative would not only benefit the country in solving unemployment but would also strategically place organizations to meet the ever-growing changes in customer preferences and to gain competitive advantage, as well as develop products for the future.

Ms Achieng was speaking in Nakuru when she inaugurated a two-day training program for 40 young innovators from various fields at the County headquarters.

The event was jointly organized by the Centre of Excellence for Livestock Innovation and Business’s (COELIB), Midrift Hurinet, American Corner, Peace Corps, Nakuru Box Ajiry Innovation Center, United Bank for Africa Kenya Limited, Coca-Cola, Social Changes network and Equity Bank.

Ms Achieng observed that the county government was determined to create a conducive environment for innovations and business growth through friendly policies to ensure a well-developed, innovation-driven entrepreneurship ecosystem among the youthful population.

‘We must be deliberate in encouraging our young people to proactively take up new risks in entrepreneurship. The journey may be rough but certainly has a reward for the courageous ones,’ advised Ms Achieng.

The CECM further said that Governor Susan Kihika’s administration was working closely with the national government to provide heavy investments in supportive infrastructures such as high-speed internet, road networks, electricity connections, Ajira Youth Empowerment Centers and high quality basic and tertiary education.

As the country works towards becoming a middle-income economy through implementing Vision 2030, Ms Achieng argued that it was imperative that the country addresses the rising youth unemployment rates by embracing local talent and creative knowledge.

She said one of the key areas that remained underutilized was the adoption of local technological innovations by public and private sector in the country.

County Director for Youth Affairs Mr Josphat Kimemia observed that Kenya has established itself as a regional giant in innovation, and is touted as Africa’s Silicon Savannah but indicated that there is a need for policies that will assist the youth to not only patent ideas, but be encouraged to partner with like-minded industrialists to commercialize the same.

Mr Kimemia explained that the inventor’s role in the creativity is to create a win-win situation where the owner gains monopoly over the invention for a limited period, while the public benefits from it before the protection period expires.

The Director observed that an inventor with difficulties in meeting the technical demands of drafting a successful application requires guidance.

He added that patent drafting, a very rare skill in Kenya, is a critical area that should be grown to produce qualified professionals to advise and assist in the applications.

According to the Global Index 2017, Kenya is among 17 middle and lower-income economies that perform significantly better on innovation despite limited state support.

A significant majority of these innovations are said to be youth led meaning there is so much potential for Kenyan youth to innovate and provide solutions to the problems affecting all the sectors of the economy.

Kenya has also been affiliated to the World intellectual Property Organisation since 1971.

Four bodies are mandated to deal with intellectual property protection: Kipi, Kenya Copyright Board (Kecobo), Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (Kephis) and Anti-Counterfeit Agency (ACA).

The number of patents has always been used as a measure of knowledge transfer but one of the constraints in Kenya is the weak Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) culture.

18 Million Trees To Be Planted In North Rift Conservancy

A total of 18 million trees will be planted in the North rift conservancy this planting season according to the regional conservator Anthony Musyoka as the country seeks to plant 32 billion trees by 2032.

Musyoka said so far a total of 4 million have already been planted in the conservancy which consists of Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Transzoia, West Pokot and Turkana counties.

Speaking during a tree planting exercise at the Iten police station, the conservator said the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) was offering technical advice to individuals and groups wishing to start tree nurseries in a bid to have enough seedlings for planting.

‘So far we have enough seedlings in the various KFS offices and within the community but we need to upscale the production to meet the demand,’ he said.

The regional conservator said that they were carrying out an extensive campaign to reach out to individual farmers, institutions and all stakeholders to plant trees even as the government concentrates in planting trees in gazetted forests.

Noting that the planting of trees is a collaboration between the government and all stakeholders, Musyoka called on farmers to ensure that they set aside at least 30% of their farms for tree planting.

‘Each individual has a responsibility to plant trees to mitigate against the effects of climate, land degradation and soil erosion,’ he said.

Keiyo North deputy county commissioner Julius Maiyo called on residents to move from just planting of trees to ensuring that they grow saying most trees planted do not mature due to destruction through grazing.

He said each assistant chief in the county had been given a target of ensuring that 3,000 trees are planted in their areas of jurisdiction for the county to meet its target.

The deputy governor Prof Grace Cheserek said the county had set a target of planting 60 million trees in five years which translates to 5 million trees per year.

She said the county was encouraging farmers to plant fruit trees and coffee especially along the escarpment alongside other trees which will not only earn them an income but also guard against landslides especially during the rainy season.

The county police commander Francis Nguli said the force will plant trees in all its offices in the sub counties as part of their contribution to the increment in forest cover.

SADC has political will and structure to bring desired peace: Geingob

President Hage Geingob has said the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has the political will and relevant structures to bring about the desired results of peace, security, and stability in the region.

Geingob was speaking as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, during the official opening of the SADC extra-ordinary Organ Troika Summit and Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs) in Windhoek on Monday.

“SADC has the political will to deal with political and security threats in our region. We not only have the political will, but we have put in place relevant structures, and will continue to strengthen them, in order to bring about the desired results of safeguarding our region’s peace, security and stability,” he noted.

Geingob said the region stands ready to address the changing dynamics in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) against the proliferation of illegal armed groups, some of which launch attacks against civilians, state security agencies, and public infrastructure from neighbouring countries.

He noted that SADC’s FIB has been deployed in eastern DRC as part of the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission aimed at securing the affected part of the country and restoring its overall territorial integrity.

The Head of State further noted that SADC will consider ways to strengthen its efforts in solidarity with the people of DRC during its upcoming elections at the end of 2023.

“Given the long-term commitment to peace and security in the DRC, SADC must focus on regaining the achievements of FIB made since March 2013 to eradicate the illegal armed groups, securing and consolidating the territorial integrity and future of a DRC whose socio-economic development is intertwined with our regional development goals,” Geingob said.
